Friedman Would Be Roiled as Chicago Disciples Rue Repudiation
Great article from Bloomberg covering the rise of the University of Chicago as the origination of free-market ideology and how that title has caused it to come under fire recently in the minds of other economic scholars given our country’s current situation. This article is a great illustration of how academic thought, often lambasted by those in the private sector, has come to form the policies of our government and governments around the world since World War II.
A surefire way to test whether you are capable of getting the chills.
Poll: 1 in 5 say Cheney worst vice president ever
I really have no opinion of Cheney one way or the other, as he was heard from very little in the last eight years. However, I would have liked to have seen how many among the 1,000 or so respondents could name 9 other Vice Presidents. I suppose if you’re comparing all Vice Presidents ever to hold the office you should at least know who the choices are, perhaps even 25% of them……Could that have diminished the number of qualified respondents? Slightly?
Toyota's Eight Year Profit Steak Comes to an End
It would be a great accounting exercise to comb through 10Ks for 2008 and find all the charges companies are taking during the 4th quarter of 2008 and the year in general. Bad years such as this one, where stock prices are already hammered and the worst is expected, allow companies to take all the one-time charges and write offs they have had stored up on their books during the good years. Accounting is a manipulative game and this year surely will bring out the manipulators, only this time it will be to the downside.
Government Bailouts: The Italian Version
As we bailout banks, Italy bails out…parmigiano cheese manufacturers?
“It’s a tragic situation,” said Marco Iemmi, who has been making parmigiano for 30 years in Salsomaggiore Terme, a small town in Italy’s fertile northern Emilia-Romagna region. “I’ll have to close up shop unless things improve.”
Italian consumers seem to support the cheese bailout, which also includes a purchase of 100,000 wheels of another grating variety, Grana Padano. The operation will cost €50 million.
Tragic indeed, Mr. Iemmi.
Iemmi? How do you even pronounce that?
